Ainu Pronunciation Guide
For Native English Speakers
Overview
Ainu is an endangered language indigenous to Hokkaido (Japan) and formerly Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. It is a language isolate — not related to Japanese. Pronunciation is relatively accessible for English speakers, but attention to consonant clusters, final consonants, and vowel length is essential.
Writing System
Ainu traditionally had no writing system. Today it is written in modified katakana (Japanese syllabary) in Japan, or in a Latin-based romanization. This guide uses the Latin romanization. Ainu has no tones.

|---|---|---|---|
| a | /a/ | a in father | |
| i | /i/ | ee in feet | |
| u | /ɨ/ or /u/ | u in but | Slightly back/central |

Difficult Sounds
Final consonants: Ainu allows consonant clusters at syllable boundaries and word-final consonants (p, t, k, m, n, r, s). Each must be fully pronounced.
Glottal stop /ʔ/: Between vowels or at word boundaries, a glottal stop can occur. Treat it as a brief full stop in the airflow.
Unaspirated stops: Like Japanese, p/t/k are unaspirated — no puff of air. English speakers naturally aspirate these; consciously suppress it.
Rhythm / Stress
- Ainu has relatively equal syllable timing.
- Stress tends to fall on the first syllable of a word.
- Closed syllables (ending in a consonant) are not notably longer than open syllables.
Common Mistakes
- Aspirating p/t/k as in English.
- Ignoring final consonants — every consonant must be articulated.
- Treating vowel length as unimportant (it changes meaning).
- Using English R instead of the Ainu tap /ɾ/.

Final Tips
Ainu's consonant clusters may feel unusual — practice reading aloud from romanized texts. Audio recordings from the Ainu Cultural Promotion Center (Japan) are essential resources. Respect the cultural significance of this endangered language and its ongoing revitalization.
