Amharic Pronunciation Guide

For Native English Speakers

Overview

Amharic is the official language of Ethiopia, written in the Ge'ez (Ethiopic) script. It is a Semitic language with ejective consonants, pharyngeal sounds, and verb-final word order. The script is phonetically regular once learned.

Writing System

Amharic uses Ge'ez (Fidel) — an abugida with 33 base characters, each modified to show 7 vowel values, giving 231+ characters. Reading direction: left to right. Each character represents a consonant-vowel combination. Learning the script is highly recommended.

Core Sounds

ሀ h /h/ h in hat
ሐ ħ /ħ/ Throat-constricted h Pharyngeal fricative
ዐ ʕ /ʕ/ No English match Voiced pharyngeal
ቅ q' /qʼ/ Ejective uvular Back of throat, popped
ጵ p' /pʼ/ Ejective p

Vowels

Amharic has 7 vowel orders embedded in the Fidel script.

Vowel IPA Approximation Notes
ə (6th order) /ə/ u in but Central, neutral
a /a/ a in father
u /u/ oo in food
i /i/ ee in feet
e /e/ e in bed
ɨ (1st order) /ɨ/ No exact match Close back unrounded
o /o/ o in note

Difficult Sounds

Ejective consonants (p', t', k', q', č'): Produced by closing the glottis and building pressure, then releasing with a sharp pop. No English equivalent.

Pharyngeal H /ħ/ and Ayin /ʕ/: Deep throat constrictions. The /ʕ/ is a voiced squeeze of the pharynx.

Geminate (doubled) consonants: Amharic uses consonant doubling to change meaning. Hold the consonant slightly longer.

Rhythm / Stress

  • Amharic stress falls on the last or penultimate syllable.
  • Gemination is more phonemically significant than stress.
  • Sentences are verb-final (Subject-Object-Verb).

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring ejectives — treating them as plain stops.
  • Confusing the two H sounds (ሀ vs ሐ).
  • Not holding doubled consonants long enough.

Practice Words

Word IPA Meaning
አማርኛ /ʔam.aɾ.ɲa/ Amharic
ሰላም /sə.lam/ hello
ቤት /bet/ house
ውሃ /wɨha/ water
ኣመሰግናለሁ /ʔa.mə.sɛɡ.na.lə.hu/ thank you

Final Tips

Learn the Fidel script alongside pronunciation — each symbol encodes a consonant+vowel pair. Ejectives are the most foreign feature; Ethiopian music and speech help internalize them. Ge'ez liturgical recordings also demonstrate formal Amharic phonology clearly.
