Amis Pronunciation Guide

For Native English Speakers

Overview

Amis (Pangcah) is an Austronesian language indigenous to the eastern coast of Taiwan — one of the most widely spoken Formosan languages. Key challenges for English speakers: glottal stops, a range of consonant types, and vowel sequences that must not be merged into diphthongs.

Writing System

Amis uses a Latin-based alphabet standardized by Taiwan's government. Letters are phonetically consistent. Apostrophes (ʼ or ') represent the glottal stop — a frequent and full consonant.

Difficult Sounds

Glottal stop /ʔ/: One of the most frequent sounds in Amis — appears word-initially, between vowels, and word-finally. Treat every apostrophe as a real consonant.

Word-initial /ŋ/: English has ng only at syllable ends; Amis can begin words with it. Practice by starting from a back-nasal position.

Vowel sequences: Amis allows multiple vowels in a row — each is a separate syllable. Do not merge them into diphthongs.

Rhythm / Stress

  • Stress typically falls on the final syllable of root words.
  • Amis is broadly syllable-timed.
  • The focus system (topic marking) changes word forms but not pronunciation fundamentally.

Common Mistakes

  • Omitting or softening the glottal stop.
  • Merging vowel sequences into single diphthongs.
  • Aspirating p/t/k as in English.
  • Treating word-initial ng as impossible.

Practice Words

Word IPA Meaning
matoʼasay /ma.to.ʔa.saj/ elder / old person
wawa /wa.wa/ child
niyaro /ni.ja.ɾo/ village
pakaen /pa.ka.ɛn/ food

Final Tips

The glottal stop is the single most important sound — it appears everywhere and omitting it changes meaning. Audio resources from Taiwan's Council of Indigenous Peoples include recordings of Amis speakers. The language has a rich oral tradition and singing culture.
