Armenian Pronunciation Guide
For Native English Speakers
Overview
Armenian is an Indo-European language isolate with its own unique alphabet. It comes in two main varieties: Eastern (spoken in Armenia) and Western (diaspora). Key challenges: the Armenian alphabet, aspirated vs. unaspirated stops, and the uvular consonants.
Writing System
Armenian uses the Armenian alphabet (Հայոց գրեր) — 38 letters created in 405 AD. It is a true alphabet (both consonants and vowels). Written left to right. Each letter has one sound. Eastern and Western Armenian share the alphabet but differ in pronunciation of stops.

Difficult Sounds
Three-way stop contrast: Armenian distinguishes voiced (/b/, /d/, /g/), voiceless unaspirated (/p/, /t/, /k/), and voiceless aspirated (/pʰ/, /tʰ/, /kʰ/) stops — three categories where English has only two.
Uvular consonants /χ/ and /ɣ/: Produced at the uvula — like the French/German guttural R, but used as fricatives. Practice with a gentle gargling motion.
Two R sounds: ռ is trilled (like Spanish rr); ր is a single tap. Both occur in Armenian and contrast in meaning.
Rhythm / Stress
- Armenian is stress-timed.
- Stress typically falls on the last syllable of a word.
- The definite article is a suffix (-ը / -ն), and does not change stress.
Common Mistakes
- Merging unaspirated and aspirated stops (treating կ and ք as the same).
- Using English R for both Armenian R sounds.
- Pronouncing խ as English h — it needs throat friction.
- Ignoring final syllable stress in favor of English patterns.

Final Tips
Learn the Armenian alphabet early — it is phonetically consistent and unlocks all reading material. Focus on the three-way stop contrast as a priority. Eastern Armenian is more widely documented online; adjust if learning Western Armenian.
