Jejueo Pronunciation Guide

For Native English Speakers

Overview

Jejueo (제주어 / 濟州語) is a critically endangered Koreanic language of Jeju Island, South Korea. UNESCO classified it as critically endangered. While related to Korean, it is not mutually intelligible. Key challenges for English speakers are the aspirated/lax/tense consonant contrasts and the unique vowel system including the arae-a vowel.

Writing System

Jejueo uses the Hangul script (same as Korean), with the addition of the archaic letter 아래아 (ㆍ) — the arae-a — representing a vowel not found in standard Korean. Hangul is a featural alphabet — consonant shapes relate to articulator placement.

Core Sounds

Jejueo shares the Korean consonant system but with some differences.

Vowels

In addition to standard Korean vowels, Jejueo uses the archaic 아래아 (ㆍ).

Hangul IPA Approximation Notes
ㅏ a /a/ a in father
ㅓ eo /ʌ/ u in but
ㅗ o /o/ o in note
ㅜ u /u/ oo
ㅡ eu /ɯ/ u in but (back)
ㅣ i /i/ ee
ㆍ (arae-a) /ɒ/ or /ə/ o in not (British) Unique to Jejueo

Difficult Sounds

Three-way consonant contrast (lax/aspirated/tense): Lax = like English voiced; aspirated = strong puff of air; tense = pressed, without aspiration or voicing. The tense series is the most challenging for English speakers.

Arae-a vowel (ㆍ): A back, open, rounded vowel similar to British English o in not. Practice with a slightly rounded open mouth.

ㄹ r/l: Between vowels it becomes a flap /ɾ/; in final position or before consonants it is /l/.

Rhythm / Stress

  • Jejueo is broadly syllable-timed like Korean.
  • Stress is not phonemic.
  • Sentence-final endings carry grammatical and politeness information.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating the three consonant series as two (collapsing lax and tense).
  • Pronouncing ㅡ (eu) as a simple schwa — it is back and unrounded.
  • Ignoring the arae-a vowel.

Final Tips

Jejueo has very limited learning resources — Korean language skills will help significantly. Recordings by older Jeju islanders are the most authentic sources. Approach this language with awareness of its endangered status and the revitalization work being done by the Jeju Development Institute.
