Romansh Pronunciation Guide

For Native English Speakers

Overview

Romansh (Rumantsch) is a Romance language spoken by ~60,000 people in Switzerland's Graubünden canton. It has five main dialects; Rumantsch Grischun is the standardized written form. Key challenges: the dorsal/uvular R, front rounded vowels, and some unique sound combinations.

Writing System

Romansh uses the Latin alphabet. Rumantsch Grischun spelling is phonetically fairly consistent. Dialects vary in spelling conventions. Special features: tg /tʃ/, ts /ts/, ch /k/ before back vowels, g before back vowels = /ɡ/.

Difficult Sounds

Front rounded vowel ü /y/: Round lips tightly while attempting /i/. Found in several Romansh dialects and the standard.

Uvular R /ʁ/: Back-of-throat friction or trill. Some mountain dialects retain an alveolar trill; Standard uses uvular.

Lateral palatal /ʎ/ (gl): Tongue body raises to the palate — like "lli" in million.

Rhythm / Stress

  • Stress typically falls on the penultimate syllable for words ending in a vowel.
  • Words ending in a consonant typically stress the last syllable.
  • Romansh is broadly syllable-timed.

Common Mistakes

  • Applying German or French R rules — Romansh has its own R variation.
  • Treating tg as /tg/ rather than /tʃ/.
  • Ignoring the ü vowel.
