Shona Pronunciation Guide

For Native English Speakers

Overview

Shona is a Bantu language spoken by ~15 million people, primarily in Zimbabwe. It is Zimbabwe's most widely spoken indigenous language. Key challenges: tone system, the prenasalized consonants, and the voiced fricatives.

Writing System

Shona uses the Latin alphabet with a largely phonetic orthography. Tones are typically not marked in everyday writing. Special letter combinations: sh /ʃ/, sv /sv/, ts /ts/, dz /dz/, nz /nz/.

Difficult Sounds

Sv/zv clusters: Both /s/ and /v/ (or /z/ and /v/) are pronounced simultaneously — not in sequence. Shona is one of few languages with such labiodental-alveolar clusters.

Prenasalized consonants: mb, nd, ng, nj, nz are single phonemes. Begin in nasal position and release into the stop.

Tone: Shona has two tones (High and Low). Tone distinguishes nouns from verbs and different grammatical forms. Not marked in standard writing.

Rhythm / Stress

  • Shona is syllable-timed.
  • Penultimate syllable typically carries prominence.
  • High tone syllables are phonemically distinct from low tone.

Common Mistakes

  • Pronouncing sv/zv as sequences instead of simultaneous articulations.
  • Treating prenasalized consonants as two sounds.
  • Ignoring tone — it distinguishes grammatical categories.

Final Tips

The sv/zv clusters and prenasalized consonants are Shona's most distinctive sounds — listen carefully and practice them in isolation before words. Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) provides audio in Shona. The tone system, while unwritten, will develop through extensive listening.
